Thanks everyone for your flexibility today with the Greening Project implementation.  Stanley started the planning for this school ground greening project a year ago to celebrate Stanley Park’s 50th Anniversary.  We now have 19 new trees, an outdoor classroom with armourstone seating, a new pathway, and lots of mulch!  As a bonus, our jumping pits have been cleaned up, our front gardens refreshed, and some new shrubs planted around our school sign.

Jason, the Landscape Ontario Project Lead, will be back tomorrow to do some finishing touches and some additional cleanup.

Parking and outdoor activities can return to normal.  We need to teach our students how to use this new outdoor space respectfully.

Going forward, we will need to water the trees weekly for the next two years.  In the spirit of Stanley Park, we have gator bags for watering.  Each tree has a gator bag attached.   The gator bag is filled with water using a hose each week.  Then, the water slowly soaks into the ground to give the trees the best chance of survival. Classes are going to volunteer for a month at a time to water our new trees.   The intent is to have our students be good stewards of their school ground.

This project would not have been possible without the leadership of Mr. Rob MacQueen, Mr. Brent Johnston and Mr. Andrew Sinclair.  Stanley would like to extend a huge thank you to our community partners Landscape Ontario, the Region of Waterloo and the Toyota Greening Initiative for making this project a reality.

We had over 40 volunteers and thousands of dollars in trees, rocks and equipment donated to Stanley Park.  Mayor Zehr, the Chair Person of the WRDSB Ted Martin, to name a few attended Stanley today to celebrate this great accomplishment.

Well done Stanley Park.
