October 7 is International Walk to School Day.

Active and Safe Routes to School (ASRTS) is transitioning our efforts from the promotion of individual special Walk to School Days to our new STEP IN – Weekly Walking Program. This program is a collaborative effort between Region of Waterloo Public Health and the Active and Safe Routes to School Committee (ASRTS) which includes representatives from the School Boards, Public Health, local municipalities, and other community partners.

Research shows that promoting walking to school on a weekly basis (walking at least once-week throughout the school-year) is more effective at changing behaviour than stand-alone days. However, these days can be an important part of a weekly walk to school program.

Join the movement now by registering with STEP IN online and receive the following ongoing supports:

·        Special day celebration promotional materials and resources

·        Monthly e-blasts with tips for classrooms, schools and parents

·        Success stories from other schools

·        Recognition and bonus eco-points
